The fleet consists of 18 wooden, GRP or steel purse-seine vessels and 4 mid-water trawler factory vessels.  The group can process approximately 3‚600mt of raw fish per day.

Over the years Oceana has introduced modern fishing and fish processing technology.  Today it is operating a full steam drying fishmeal plant in the St Helena Bay facility and an indirect hot air drying fishmeal plant in the Hout Bay facility.

Modern equipment is used to separate press water and solids efficiently and to remove valuable fish oil.  All water is processed in waste heat evaporator plants to ensure maximum efficiency of energy sources.

The smaller facility at Walvis Bay still runs off the conventional direct drying technology.  On the factory vessels, fish that is not frozen is immediately reduced to sea processed fishmeal with onboard steam drying equipment.

Species used: Anchovy, Pilchards, Red-Eye Herring, Horse Mackerel

The fish are caught in the clean unpolluted waters of Southern Africa by the Group’s purse-seine and mid-water trawler factory vessels.  The catch is delivered to our three strategically placed plants, thereby ensuring maximum freshness of raw material, the firm base for our quality product.

Fishing rights for 15 years have been allocated.  The South African pelagic fish stocks are well researched and controlled under the guardianship of the local Department of Agriculture, Forrestry & Fisheries regulatory authority.

Government policy and procedures for the allocation of the Total Allowable Catch (Quota) and control measures are clear and are well policed.  Operational management procedures are based on good internationally accepted principles and therefore the risk of over exploitation is limited.  We can provide our customers with full traceability of fishmeal which is sold to them.

Processing plants are being continuously upgraded to ensure the highest appropriate quality standards, in line with other world producers.

There are strict in-house quality control systems in place with frequent verification of results in our own laboratories ensuring effective process control.  In addition batches of fishmeal are sampled on-line and analysed by an independent inspection agency in an accredited laboratory according to our customers' requirements.  Our products have been tested for dioxin and PCBs and analysis results have confirmed that the levels are extremely low.

We continue to actively pursue the highest air and water quality standards within regional and global parameters.  We have active environmental teams at sites, ensuring latest best practices are pursued.

Individual batches as per customer specific requirements are kept separate in pre-selected bag sizes (40kg, 50kg, 1 ton bulk options).

Full traceability of these batches is available to customers - Road transport and sea freight is arranged on customer request.
